The Thematic Unity of the Book of the Twelve by Jason T. Lecureux

By Jason T. Lecureux

'Return to me', announces Yhwh of Hosts, 'and i'm going to go back to you', pronounces Yhwh of Hosts. The sentence stands on the head of the prophecy of Zechariah (1.3). yet what does it suggest to 'return to Yhwh'? And what does it suggest that Yhwh 'will go back to you'? LeCureux argues that it truly is this name to repentance, and Yhwh's responses to it, that shape the unifying and organizing topic of go back for the e-book of the Twelve. whereas reports at the improvement and composition of the Twelve have proved fruitful in recent times, this booklet makes an attempt to extend on these works through having a look heavily on the ultimate type of the Twelve, rather of its establishing and shutting books (Hosea-Joel, Zechariah-Malachi), and the position that canonical place and subject matter play in the booklet. This venture starts via defining the functionality of topic in biblical books, after which compares the position subject matter performs in Isaiah with its position within the Twelve, earlier than undertaking the first activity of exegesis. LeCureux examines using 'return' within the Twelve, exhibiting that it's the name to come that controls the occasions of the Day of Yhwh. Going extra, the exegesis uncovers the hyperlinks among the go back imperatives of Hosea 14, Joel 2, Zechariah's personal calls to come back and Malachi's concluding query, 'How are we to return?'(3.7). what's finally printed is the multifaceted nature of God's dating together with his humans, person who comprises the people's fight to show from covenantal disobedience towards Yhwh in repentance, in addition to Yhwh's personal turning from judgment towards his humans in blessing.

I will argue that though communicated by one word, the use of ĈČ› is but an abbreviation for the more comprehensive theological statement: ‘Return to me and I will return to you’ which is de¿ned in more detail as one progresses through the Twelve. Furthermore, the imperative call to return gives structure to the work as the call is concentrated in the opening (Hosea–Joel) and closing (Zechariah–Malachi) of the Book. Finally, the use of the word in all twelve writings provides a continuous reminder to the reader that keeps ĈČ› in the forefront of the mind.

To this end, the present work will proceed as follows: Chapter 2 will explain the methodology behind the thesis, dealing with the de¿nition of theme as it relates to the Twelve. Chapter 3 will examine the function of theme as it relates to other prophetic books, particularly Isaiah, in an effort to draw parallels between the function of theme in Isaiah and the Twelve. Chapter 4, which is the heart of the present volume, will offer a detailed examination of the use of ĈČ› in Hosea–Joel, Jonah, and Zechariah–Malachi.

15-16 shift the focus from Edom speci¿cally to all the nations in general. Another literary element closely related to the subject of the work is the plot. Plot is understood as ‘a pattern of events’13 contained in a literary work. Plot is also related to the subject and involves characters, rising tensions, climax, falling action, and resolution. Though plot and theme both act as unifying agents to the author and the reader, a theme lacks the detailed characteristics of a plot. 16 This implies that theme has a ‘broader’,17 more signi¿cant impact, than motif.
