Lightweight Landscape: Enhancing Design through Minimal Mass by Alessandra Zanelli, Luigi Spinelli, Carol Monticelli, Paolo

By Alessandra Zanelli, Luigi Spinelli, Carol Monticelli, Paolo Pedrali

This e-book explains how light-weight fabrics and constructions might be deployed in constructions to fulfill excessive environmental and aesthetic criteria and emphasizes how the idea that of lightness in construction expertise and layout dovetails with the need to reinforce panorama. the 1st a part of the publication, on light-weight development, goals to foster using membranes in the particular climatic context and specifically considers how light-weight fabrics and cutting edge applied sciences can increase the standard of transitority areas. the second one half focuses completely on panorama, offering novel ways within the look for visible lightness and the search to enhance city areas. specific consciousness is paid to the Italian event, the place the conventional appreciation of brick and stone has restricted the scope to be used of light-weight buildings and membrane fabrics, usually relegating them to a secondary or beside the point function. The reader will come to understand how this perspective demeans a truly complex effective area and neglects the traditional culture of transitority structure.

On the other hand, owing to their thin section, membranes bring with them difficulties in maintaining optimal environmental conditions in differing external situations (Fig. 3). Nonetheless, when used in projects, in terms of function and the degree of temporariness/permanence, membranes must ensure comfort through their mechanical, thermal-hygro, acoustic and visual performance (in the latter case, exploiting 10–15 % luminous transmittance and a reduction in artificial lighting), while respecting fire resistance, vulnerability to condensation, and environmental impact performance associated with material manufacturing processes and their lifetime.

The designer has to fully understand the properties of the materials, if he is really looking to transform them into useful everyday objects. Only by understanding the materials of his project can he adapt his idea to suit the best fabrication process (Fig. 11). Yet, overall, he can also celebrate the fabrication process as part of the language of the design itself. However, fruitful interaction between designers and specialist fabricators is beneficial. For each project, the designer must be able to clearly communicate his ideas to his process specialist.

The latter is the typical situation of cable 22 P. Beccarelli structures which, despite the linear behaviour of the cable under tension, are characterised by an overall non-linear behaviour due to the influence of geometric changes on equilibrium requirements. The phenomenon is still further magnified in the membrane structure due to non-linearity of the material depending on the complex interaction between warp and fill (crimp interchange) and the coating layer. The comparison between conventional roofing forms and tensioned membranes is generally based on the mere confrontation of a few parameters which generally comes from evolution of the building technology.
