2 ~v Spectroscopy of 1S-2S We are confident that it will be possible to observe hydrogen 1S-2S two-photon transitions even with low-power cw ultraviolet radiation, generated by nonlinear sum frequency mixing of two\different single-mode lasers [14]. We are presently experimenting with a setup as shown in Fig. , and although no signal has yet been observed, a discussion of this scheme can serve to illuminate some of the technical difficulties and to estimate what should be possible in the near future.
