Of course, this is only true if our goal is, in fact, to make the world a better place. ” On the other had, if our goal was just to do a good deed—in order to feel proud of ourselves, to live up to social expectations, to get into a heaven, or for some other reason that revolves around us—then it doesn’t really matter whether our donation helped one child or whether it helped 1,000 children.

But we should not consider giving money to them to be an efficient act of charity. We should never let our support for such non-profits reduce the amount of time and money we donate to effective ones. Imagine I give $5,000 a year to charity, with $3,000 of it going to very effective charities like Seva and $2,000 of it going to the Theatre Communications Group. If I want to succeed at charity—that is, if I want to improve the world as much as possible with the slice of my life I devote to charitable giving—I’d give all $5,000 to very effective charities like Seva.

It was one of the most unpleasant experiences I’ve ever had. The debacle took place 9,000 feet up in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona. While the idea of skiing in Arizona may sound like a joke, or at least something entirely unnatural (maybe you’re imagining artificial snow packed on top of hot, dusty cliff sides, with a cactus poking out from beneath the white façade), the reality is that the White Mountains are pretty aptly named. They are hit with 250 inches of a snow a year, more than enough to make the area a skiing Mecca for those living in the southwestern United States.
