The price of oil is a reference for the cost structure of virtually all industrial sectors, because oil is massively used for transportation (with no foreseeable substitutes), it determines the prices of other energy sources (such as gas) or the feasibility of energy projects (such as nuclear or renewable), and is a basic input in key industries such as chemicals, plastics, and fertilizers.
Renewable energy sources (such as wind, solar, geothermal, or waves) can provide a very effective and clean solution to take advantage of existing local resources, and replace fossil generation. The European Renewable Energy Council (2004, 2) estimates that renewable energy could provide 50% of the world’s primary energy by 2040. Although a 50% contribution may look too high in the medium term (in 2008 solar, wind, and geothermal together contributed less than 1%), in some countries such as Denmark renewable sources already account for almost 20% of electricity production (Danish Energy Agency 2008, 3).
