Since the 1980s, Mochida has been actively involved in enormous studies in the field of Computational Wind Engineering. Since 1998, Mochida has been the chairman of the working group of CFD prediction of pedestrian wind environments organised in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ). Recently, his working group issued the AIJ guidelines for the practical application of CFD to the pedestrian wind environment around buildings. xxxiiâ•…Contributors He was also chairman of the committee on countermeasures to urban heat island, organised by the AIJ from 2001 to 2004, and since 2007 he has chaired the technical committee on the development of CASBEE-HI (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environmental Efficiency on Heat Island Relaxation).
Geographic Information System-based (GIS) Urban Climatic Maps (UCMaps) offer a solution. Fundamentally, this is a way for planners to spatially visualise the problems that are ‘critical and prevailing’ and their solutions. Based on human physiological heat balance models, the different colours of the UCMap indicate different ‘climatopes’ and thus the different characteristics of the urban thermal environment. The embedded calculations allow one to discern the likely causes of the problems. Hence, it is possible to develop corresponding mitigation methods for planners.
