Sam’s finger tightened on one of the triggers. What else could she do? This was a life-or-death situation, and hadn’t she killed before to save herself? But this guy. . he looked as scared as she felt. Hell, he was even younger than she was, by the looks of him; he should be at university or messing around with his mates, not trying to take over the world. How was she supposed to kill him? She knew the answer before she thought of the question. She couldn’t. All she could do was lower the gun and feel the looks of the others upon her.

The men almost collided with Leitz on his way out, but didn’t say anything; doubtless, Leitz outranked him in his own branch of the military. Now that they were indoors, Fitz got a better look at Leitz. He was a harried-looking Sturmbannführer. Though he was meticulously clean-shaven, Fitz got the impression that he’d skipped a few meals too many. He looked like the sort of man who was just in too damn much of a rush to bother with trivialities like eating. It’d probably get him killed someday, Fitz theorised, and probably just as well.

Numbers mean nothing, little man, however provoked the majority might feel. ’ Fitz had been on guard duty for what seemed like hours. He hoped desperately that no one would attack the village, not just for fear of a skirmish, but because he had no idea whether it would be morally right of him to sound any alarm. He’d much rather go off and have a quiet smoke on his own – if he could have bummed some cigarettes off someone – and maybe a little nose around. He was guarding one side of a field just on the fringe of town.
